Title Tag and Meta Description

In this post we’re going to look into what are arguably the two most important tags for search engines and visitors alike. The title tag and meta description.

What are they?

The content of these tags are shown within the search engine results. The blue title link is the title tag and the meta description is the text below.

Why are they so important?

The information written here has two roles; firstly it needs to be compelling enough to attract your customers to click on the link to your site and it also needs to be clear in explaining to the user what the page will be about.

Whether you have very little experience in SEO or you are a professional in this field, it’s important to always keep on top of how the pages of your website will be displayed in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) across every search engine.

Every search engine displays your web page in a different way and based on what you are trying to target generally there are distinctive approaches to optimising.

How to write a meta description?

The key to a great meta description, you need to keep in mind a few factors.

  • Keywords - Include your most important keywords from the webpage so the user knows that what they are searching for will be on your page.
  • Compelling copy - Treat your meta description as an advert. Make use of keywords and make sure the text is captivating enough to encourage users to click through to your website
  • Length -  Your meta description should be no longer than 135 -160 characters long. Any longer and the end of your content may be cut off in order to fit.
  • Don’t duplicate - Ensure that each page on your website has a different meta description. Google may penalise you for duplicating your meta descriptions.

Oh and another thing ...

Don’t over-stuff your title and description with your keywords and try not to use more than 2 commas in the description.  Not paying attention to this will significantly reduce your chances of high rankings.

Hope this helps. As always, if you need any help writing and optimising these tags - get in touch.
